Don Hughes was saved at the age of eight at the West Norfolk Baptist Church in Portsmouth, Virginia, but as a teen struggled living for the Lord. In 1965 Don was drafted into the United States Army and served in South Korea. While there, he rededicated his life to the Lord to serve Him in full-time missions.
Helen Briggs Hughes was born again after finishing her studies at Tennessee Temple Bible College in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Don and Helen met while attending Temple, and they married in 1969.
Don and Helen joined Baptist International Missions, Inc. (BIMI), in 1971. They first worked in the Mariana Islands. With the help of another BIMI missionary, they started the Harvest Baptist Church in Guam. This church continues today with a Christian school and seminary. From Guam the Lord led them to South Korea. After attending language school, they started the Central Baptist Church of Daejeon. Don and Helen had to leave Korea due to a governmental change that would not allow them to reinstate their visas. A national pastor who trained under Don continued to pastor the church.
After their departure from Korea, the Hughes family worked with an American military church in Hawaii for two years to relieve a fellow missionary. Through much prayer, they determined God was calling them to work in the country of England. They served in England for eighteen years and started the Calvary Baptist Church of Peterborough. (This church is thriving today and in 2015 they flew Don and Helen back to Peterborough to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the church.)
After serving in England, Don and Helen returned to the United States due to unforeseen health problems. The Hughes began working with BIMI's Reseeding America. Through this ministry God led them to the Lighthouse Baptist Church in Johnson City, New York. They served the Lord by strengthening the church members and repairing the church building after the 2006 Binghamton Flood. Again in 2011 another flood destroyed the church building but not the work of the Lord in Binghamton. For the next fourteen months the Lord blessed as the church met in a local hotel banquet hall and prayed where God would have them locate. God answered this prayer by leading the Lighthouse Baptist Church to merge with a sister church in the neighboring town of Vestal, New York, where it continues to this day.
Don and Helen Hughes desire to serve their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and His local churches by helping struggling churches rebuild and by helping young pastors in need of short-term assistance under the Assistance & Relief Missionary (ARM) ministry of BIMI.
